I suffered a cardiac arrest at 35! I was diagnosed with depression at 34! Life has never been easy for an entrepreneur and I can understand this completely. My life and career has always been about startups, and about problem solving. I started my career being an early employee at a startup, and then after 4 years working for 16 hours even on weekends, I decided to pursue my own startup journey. I sold my first startup for an 8-figure and raised $20M in my second. I accept that I never really had a healthy lifestyle. I was just working and I promise I loved doing what I was doing. I skipped meals, I had been sleep deprived and I had mastered the game of hustling. Little did I know about the hell awaiting me at the end of the road! It’s unfortunate that there is no science taught in schools about depression and about mental health. There are a few struggles that we can never overcome. We are often told to compartmentalize them in some corner of our brain instead of addressing them and solving them. I too did not know what to do about them. Staring at the fan for hours, not being able to sleep or sleeping for 20 hours on weekends, overeating or not eating at all, just staring into thin air and unable to express my feelings to anyone, had various deep-rooted connotations.
I was lucky enough to have been bestowed with friends who guided me through. And I finally sought help.. I now know that most of us are not even aware about our mental well being. I was lucky to overcome this. I’m now on a mission to help guide 10,000 startup entrepreneurs in their journey of finding emotional and mental well being. With S.A.F.E. (THE SHARMIN ALI FOUNDATION FOR ENTREPRENEURS), I am on a mission to ensure easy access to therapists with guided support in this lonely entrepreneurial journey.
